Who this handbook is for

For passive-income retirees, remote nomads, and investors still asking whether a golden visa leads to nationality.

How to visit, and for how long

Schengen 90/180. Chinese passports need a Schengen visa. A visit is not work and does not convert to a D visa in-country; D visas are filed at a Portuguese post in your country of residence.

How to work or reside

D7 needs stable passive income and housing; D8 needs remote contracts and an income floor; work D visas need an employer. The golden visa shifted to funds and donations — housing is largely out. AIMA processing time has to be planned as slack.

PR and citizenship

Five lawful years can lead to PR or nationality (A2 Portuguese and other tests). Golden-visa physical-presence rules are lighter than D7, but ties to Portugal and rule changes remain. Five years is not an automatic passport.

FAQ

Is D7 or the golden visa easier for citizenship?

Both are about five years. D7 expects real residence, which helps language and genuine-link tests. Golden visas need fewer days, so the link can look weaker, and the rules keep tightening.

Can you still buy a house for a Portuguese golden visa?

Residential real estate is largely closed. Qualifying funds and other listed investments remain — use current law.
