Who this handbook is for

For South American travel, Lusophone work or investment, and Mercosur passport holders lining up two-year PR.

How to visit, and for how long

Many passports are visa-free for 90 days. The US, Australia and Canada have been in and out of eVisa. Chinese passports must check Itamaraty / Federal Police notices before travel. Visitors cannot work.

How to work or reside

VITEM covers work, investment, research and family. Mercosur nationals have a residence agreement. Jobs or investments are often approved federally, visa-stickered at a mission, then registered with Federal Police plus a CPF.

PR and citizenship

Mercosur nationals often reach PR in two years; others around four. Naturalisation is commonly four years (shorter for Lusophone countries or parents of Brazilians). Dual nationality is allowed. Confirm with the Ministry of Justice.

Time to PR:2–4 years by category, or direct via investment
