Who this handbook is for

For holidays and WHV, skilled migrants after a skills assessment, and people on bridging visas counting four years to citizenship.

How to visit, and for how long

Many passports use ETA or eVisitor; Chinese passports usually need Visitor 600. Stays are often three months, with no work (except WHV). Admission is still a border decision.

How to work or reside

Skilled migration needs a skills assessment, English and an EOI score, then an invitation for 189, state-nominated 190 or regional 491. Employer-sponsored 482 can lead to 186. Graduates may hold Temporary Graduate.

PR and citizenship

189 / 190 / 186 are permanent. 491 is a temporary regional visa that can lead to 191. Citizenship usually needs four years of lawful residence including one as a PR, plus presence. Confirm with Home Affairs.
